Started in 2005, the Colorado Mountain Dog was created to fill a need for a dog with strong guardian instincts that also possessed family friendly dispositions. Our journey started with Charlie, a purebred Great Pyrenees with very handsome badger marks. Being surrounded by girls, Dave wanted a "big boy" and that's exactly what we got! Not that Charlie knows how big he is, as he loves to sit on your lap. When we realized how high the demand was for these dogs we decided to find Charlie a girlfriend. Enter Maggie, one of the most beautiful, affectionate dogs I have ever met! Maggie is 75% Great Pyrenees and 25% Maremma Sheepdog. I know it sounds weird, but the two took to each other instantly and it was like love at first sight. As with everything , owning these two came with a learning curve! Guardian dogs like to wander, see what's out there, it's part of their job. Charlie doesn't challenge the fence, Maggie however is a skilled climber and clever contortionist when she puts her mind to it! So unless you live on 100's of acres with plenty of room to roam, you should have some good fencing to help the dogs know their boundaries. We kept one of the pups from their first litter. Stella Blue is one of the smartest dogs I've ever had! She has wonderful recall, a keen eye for things that don't belong and a good respect for her larger pasture mates.
Maggie and Charlie are both OFA hip certified and registered with the CMDA.
Maggie worked hard and had 9 puppies! 6 boys, 3 girls and all doing well.
